It's not fresh in my mind anymore, but the take-home lessons are still in there from last week's demo on Humiliation Play. (And she gave us all handouts to take home!) A newbie to the group, and knowing nothing of the presenter other than hearsay from other members, I was there for the topic. And she did it more than justice.

An experienced Georgia-based Domme, Lady D comes from a background in therapy. Her calling is as a healer; while administering discipline comes naturally to her, humiliation didn't, at first. She explained that it took some experience to become comfortable with something that seemed, at first, the opposite of her true calling, relating her difficulties - particularly with verbal humiliation, barely able to utter the word "cunt." But some people crave humiliation in some form or another (your humble author included.)

Verbal humiliation is pretty straightforward, although it's often the most difficult of all, because it requires overcoming a behavioral taboo that's deeply ingrained in a lot of us - particularly women, who are taught "If you don't have anything nice to say..." etc. (I'm sure you sensitive type men have the same problem. I have had a couple of lovers who had the same problem Lady D did, and I had to reassure them every step of the way - YES it's OK to call me this, PLEASE grab me by the hair, oh PLEASE call me that, Louder, Oh yeah, Say it like you mean it... Public humiliation is one of her particular favorites. Her eyes shone with infectious glee as she told us some of her stories. (My favorite involved a remote-controlled shock collar, the dog training kind.) The point of public humiliation is to create a situation in which "the public" assumes that nothing unusual is going on, whether by putting the sub in a predicament in which they must maintain normal behavior despite some kind of stimulation outside of their control, or by somehow making them handicapped in a way that appears pitiable but still normal. (Another favorite: bandaging someone's hands and spoon-feeding him at a restaurant.) The point is not to shock passers-by, but to make the sub try desperately NOT to let on that anything weird is happening. It's their struggle to maintain normalcy that makes this type of humiliation play deliciously amusing (and Lady D does LOVE to be amused!)

She touched on the issue of racial humiliation - a touchy issue, to be sure! Because it has the potential to hit raw spots in a lot of people, it's an uncommon practice in kink circles. However, for some, racial denigration has an undeniable erotic power, often rooted in early sexual experiences. When practiced with the appropriate degree of pre-negotiation and mutual respect, it can be cathartic - for both Dominant and submissive.

She made a point of distinguishing between play and punishment - which applies to all areas of D/s. Don't use, as punishment, something the sub actually enjoys - "Don't throw me in that briar patch!" Don't associate a pleasurable activity with punishment. It diminishes the activity and isn't effective as a deterrent.

On the other hand, using humiliation as a form of punishment, doing something the sub really hates and/or fears, is to venture into dangerous territory. Tread carefully - you could, as she put it, "step on a land mine," tapping into previous real emotional trauma, which is an awful thing for your poor trusting sub to suddenly relive! As the handout puts it (I love handouts,) Unless you are extraordinarily intuitive, "this is not the type of play you do with a newbie or someone you don't know well." If you feel a sudden chill, if the sub suddenly seems uncomfortable, then STOP and talk to them.

The most important take-home message of the demo was the distinction between humiliation PLAY and *actual abuse.* It's important to establish boundaries - it's not play if the sub thinks that you REALLY believe the names you're calling them! One of the audience members related her own experience, in the context of an online relationship, of one Dom who verbally abused her to the point that she began to wonder if he didn't really think of her in those terms. And that's just not fun! To hell with that! That doesn't hurt good, it just hurts. My immediate thought was, that's nearly as bad as someone who uses the context of previously agreed-upon rape play to force nonconsensual sex. (Hypothetical in my own experience, but I've heard a few relationship horror stories.)

Especially touching was the interaction between Lady D and her Mentor, the Duchess, who watched the presentation with obvious pride in her "Baby Girl." This is the kind of relationship that we in the Kink community should aspire to. Mutual respect, support, and real friendship. I could see it in the way they regarded eachother: two powerful women, one deferential to the other, but in a way so natural, tempered with good humor, as to be barely perceptible.

She told us about the time that the Duchess sat in, unexpectedly, on one of her lectures, about suddenly finding herself totally mute with embarassment in the presence of her Mentor. Going into a fit of hysterical laughter. Here was Lady D, this strong, formidable, eminently capable woman, letting us all in on one of her most personally humiliating moments.

This is maybe the key to her success as a speaker: Lady D is essentially humble. Confident and self assured, and God knows, a commanding presence! But, willing to admit - for her audience's sake - her own weaknesses. She not only projects confidence, but inspires it. More motivating than any theoretical breakdown or how-to could ever be, she radiated the implicit message: "You can do this too."

The latest assignment for my digital media class is to 1) illustrate and 2) illuminate a myth or fairy tale, our choice. I picked the myth of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus from Ovid's Metamorphoses.

Years ago, traipsing through the Louvre, I came across the Borghese Hermaphroditus. Beautiful, isn't she? What a magnificent ass!

What a fascinating creature! How could I not want to pay him/her homage with my art?

So: Part 1 of the assignment is pretty straightforward, taking the narrative at face value... but Part 2 is making me nervous! My instructor wants us to "illuminate" our story, which according to him means we should somehow get to its "moral." This is under the belief that all myths are meant to teach a lesson about human nature and how to live in the world. Greek mythology is hard to pin down, esoteric, multilayered.
Rather than approaching it from a classicist perspective (what it would have meant to contemporary readers,) I am reading up on Medieval and Renaissance interpretations of the myth, intersex characters and imagery in Elizabethan and Italian drama and poetry, and maybe later works too. There's some alchemical significance to the symbol of the Hermaphrodite. Just not sure what it is yet.

Further research has yielded that bathing in the pool of Salmacis was thought to turn men into passive homosexuals ("weaken...leave them half a man"). One Freudian interpretation has Hermaphroditus rejecting the woman (Salmacis) herself while desiring her "pool" (read: her sex.) And this, from Erotic Beasts and Social Monsters: Shakespeare, Jonson, and comic androgyny:

Since I first started on NiteFlirt back in June, I have found it well nigh impossible to stick to a predictable schedule.
